Post subject: What is Malaysian Identity?

Posted: Mon Oct 09, 2006 3:39 pm

This is the first topic for us to discuss, I know it's very broad but I think it's good to discuss about this for a start.

As a practise designer, artist, marketer, advertising, brander and people who involve in creative practices,:

What does the term “Malaysia Identity’ mean to you?

Does it remind you of anything or relates to something else?
What are the elements in Malaysian Identity?

Post subject: Malaysian Identity - can we define it?

Well, i guess it's hard to define and claim what is Malaysian 'Identity'. As a multicultural nation we blend in to each other culture and tradition, that is already hard to define what culture are we in? Perhaps looking back at the history will be a good start.

Perhaps it's easier then to define what Malaysian (or any other national) identity is by identifying what it isn't.

Given that Malaysia is multicultural what are the "ingredients" that make up Malaysian identity? Ethnicity eg Malay, Indian, Chinese? Religion eg Christian, Muslim? Attributes eg tech savvy, consumerist?

Shocked

This might relates to what Nasya said...or perhaps not..
Do we need really need to define "identity".... or can we define it?.

Defining what is "not Malaysia" is hard...because Malaysia is a mix of different culture, religion, tradition and belief. There is a lot of inter-marrige and this will again add in the 'Malaysian value'.. I think Malaysian is changing...

Comparing Malaysian in 50's and now...there is a lot to talk about...

I remember P.Ramlee movies ...I love his movies.. Laughing
I grow up with his movies..
(P.Ramlee is Malaysian famous actor, singer, director, comedian, and much more) Some of his famous movies are 'Pendekar Bujang Lapuk', 'Musang Berjanggut', 'Keluarga 69', Tiga Abdul' 'Bujang Lapuk' and 'Masam-masam Manis'. Most of his movies have lots of culture influences and it also impact how the Malaysian culture evolved.
more about P. Ramlee - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P.Ramlee
Can movies represent the country and the culture? Perhaps the cultural and national identity...
